As a kid, bikes were loads of fun. I always wanted to be a skateboarder but I didn’t have the patience to commit time and energy to practicing tricks. Instead, one Christmas, I asked for a BMX. I’ve still got the same BMX today – in fact I rode it last summer just for kicks. I rode everywhere on that old thing and spent many happy hours on it tearing round town.
A few years back when I bought a bike, I picked up a mountain bike. I love the outdoors and the escapism that mountain biking provides is second to none. Spending the time out in the fresh air, surrounded by woodland is exactly what I needed when I first bought the Camber. Since then it’s been a love affair with mountain biking and the Bronson continues to deliver smiles.
Just before George and I flew to Spain, I did something that breaks the pattern though: I bought a BMX. Honestly, it was my brother than inspired me to do so. You see, the same Christmas I got my BMX he also got one. We rode a lot together (although neither of use ever got particularly good at it) and so seeing that he’d recently picked up a new BMX to start riding again stirred up some nostalgia. Facebook marketplace to the rescue and a quick drive down the motorway and I’d managed to bag a Mafiabikes Kush 2.0+. I know next to nothing about BMXs except that this is an entry level bike according to the Mafia website. It seems ok to me.
Last week I went with Jack, my brother, to the most local indoor skatepark we know of and spent almost a full day there. It was entirely refreshing to be a total beginner at something again. In fact, we spent the first hour or two learning how to turn round on the ramps once we’d ridden up the transition. I’m not sure that I feel the same way towards BMX as I do towards mountain biking, at least not yet, but it is really good fun to be riding something that feels new and where it’s a little less about the miles and a little more about repeating things to learn new skills.
Whether I decide to stick to BMX over the coming weeks and months will be something I’ll need to wait and see about but I do know this: I’m enjoying it right now and I’ll be posting some BMX related riding on the channel whilst I continue to ride it.
